What is the plug on the side of a 700R4?

Writer David Mack
the plug on the left side only controls the converter clutch. you really need to use the lock up feature,if not you will eventually burn up the trans. if you do a lot of interstate driving.as the converter will not get any cooling lube with the lockup feature not working.

Can you run a 700r4 transmission without a computer?

To run a 700-R4 trans behind a carbureted engine without a computer, at the very least the TV cable must be hooked up to the carburetor and properly adjusted. Not just a simple kickdown cable like your TH350 analogue, the TV cable controls line pressure and shift points.

Does a 700r4 have a lockup converter?

The GM 700-R4 & 200-4R transmissions utilize a lock up converter to help create a more efficient transmission.

At what speed should a 700r4 shift into overdrive?

We will say that, when properly adjusted, the First-to-Second shift should occur at 15-20 mph; Second-to-Third shift at 25-30 mph; and Third-to-Fourth shift at 40-45 mph.

How do I know if my 700R4 is locked up?

12 volts is applied to a solenoid valve in the transmission when in 4th gear determined by a 4th gear pressure switch in the transmission. You can tell if it is in lock up by watching the tach when you accelerate or decelerate in 4th gear. If it's not in lock up, the tack will move up or down rapidly.

How to understand '80's Silverado/Sierra TCC lockup

How do I know if my torque converter is locked?

How do I know if my torque converter is locking up? Notice your RPM reading at your dashboard. If you see that your RPM reading rises constantly even though you're not cruising your vehicle, that's the sign of a locking-up torque converter.

What is TCC lockup?

The Transmission Converter Clutch (TCC)

Lockup reduces slippage in the converter increasing fuel economy. For the converter clutch to apply, two conditions must be met: Internal transmission fluid pressure must be correct.

How do you bypass a TCC solenoid?

To bypass the shift and TCC solenoids, you simply need to connect standard 194 light bulbs to these individual circuits coming from the PCM and then connect the other side of the bulbs to ignition B+. The light bulbs will then serve as a "load" which will simulate the solenoids.

What year 700R4 is best?

Generally, 1987 and up TH700R4s or 1990-'93 4L60 units are the most desirable.

How much power can a stock 700R4 handle?

I've read a stock 700r4 can handle 350 lb-ft of torque. But some were rated higher depending on it's application. 1989 was not a high horsepower maybe 230 or torque motor if I recall correctly. You could just have that trans freshened up to handle new motor.

Which transmission is better 700R4 or 4L60E?

700R4: The Good And The Bad. Shifting over to the 4L60E side, the main advantage of this transmission is that electronics eliminate the need for a TV cable and that whirling dervish of weights and springs to establish shift control.

Where is the torque converter clutch solenoid located?

A torque converter clutch solenoid controls the flow of fluid to the torque converter. It is located near the transmission and the engine's rear.

How does a TCC solenoid work?

When the TCC solenoid receives a signal from the engine control module (ECM), it opens a passage in the valve body and hydraulic fluid applies the TCC. When the ECM signal stops, the solenoid closes the valve and pressure is vented, causing the TCC to disengage.

What are the gear ratios in a 700R4 transmission?

The 700R4 transmission first gear, second gear, third gear, fourth gear, and reverse gear are 3.06, 1.63, 1, 0.7, and 2.9 respectively. Its lower first gear ratio provides excellent performance for low vehicle speeds.

What is a TV cable on a transmission?

TV stands for throttle valve, which refers to a small valve in the automatic transmission that determines hydraulic line pressure. This valve is hooked via a cable mechanism to the throttle linkage.

What is a constant pressure valve body?

The Constant Pressure Valve Body™ eliminates the chance of transmission failure. While the TV cable still needs connection for proper transmission shifting speeds, the TCI® Constant Pressure Valve Body™ provides more freedom when setting part throttle shift points.
